Description
The Sardine Run, South Africa
Dive Deep into the Greatest Shoal on Earth
Imagine the ocean exploding into motion — dolphins slicing through silver shoals, sharks flashing below, and birds raining down like arrows. This is the Sardine Run: a high-adrenaline, salt-sprayed, heart-pounding collision of life on South Africa’s Wild Coast.
Every winter, billions of sardines race north along the Eastern Cape, chased by a hungry entourage of predators. For a few short weeks, the sea becomes one of Earth’s greatest spectacles — a natural event so electric, it has to be lived to be believed.
What is the Sardine Run?
Nature’s most astonishing ocean migration
From May to mid-June, cooler waters hug the coastline and pull sardines into shallow depths. Hot on their tails come dolphins, sharks, whales, and thousands of diving birds. Cape gannets plummet like missiles, dolphins herd bait balls into perfect formation, and Bryde’s whales rise through the chaos in spectacular gulps.
It’s the ocean at full throttle — unpredictable, unfiltered, and absolutely unforgettable.
